Both AC and DC

Even if you know little about electricity, you’ve probably heard of alternating currents (AC) and direct currents (DC). AC can flow in different directions, while DC can only flow in one direction.

All vehicles – even ones that run only on gas – actually have DC-powered motors. These are used to power things like your windows and windshield wipers. But for the motor to power the car, only AC will work.

Types of AC Electric Motor

Two kinds of AC motors can be used in an electric car: asynchronous – also called induction –and synchronous. In both, a rotating magnetic field is created by the stator, which is part of the rotary system.

With asynchronous motors, the rotor is constantly trying to keep up with this field, which is why they can produce a lot of power.

In a synchronous motor, the rotor spins at the same speed as the magnetic field. These engines provide high torque at lower speeds. They are also typically lighter and more compact.
