January 11th, 2023 by

The 2023 Ford Explorer is the latest in a long line of exciting and powerful Ford Explorers that make it easy to explore, travel, and transport everything and everyone you love. Here at Woodhouse Ford of Blair, we’re excited to share the history of iconic vehicles like the Ford Explorer, with a closer look at the models that have come before.

Early History

The Ford Explorer was first introduced with the 1991 model year, and was designed to replace the Ford Bronco II. The first generation lasted from 1991 to 1994 and the second generation lasted from 1995 to 2001. During that period, the Ford Explorer was marketed as a vehicle for the family, with safety features and programs, as well as ample off-road capability. It was available in three-door and five-door configurations, both versions of which were larger than the Ford Bronco II that it replaced.

Recent History

The Ford Explorer continued to impress, both for family driving and for adventuring. The third generation Ford Explorer transformed this model into an exclusive five-door body style, a design which lasted from 2002 to 2005. The fourth generation lasted from 2006 to 2010, and fifth generation from 2011 to 2015. There was a fifth generation Ford Explorer refresh from 2016 to 2019, and then the sixth generation started in 2020, which is the most recent generation that includes the 2023 Ford Explorer model year.

In the Ford SUV lineup today, the Ford Explorer sits between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition in terms of size and design. It continues to offer impressive off-road capability and functionality, as well as the impressive safety and family-friendly features it has long been known for.
